Specter of Terrorism Slows Tourism – BIRN

Representatives of the tourism sector in BiH say that fears of terror attacks are having a significant impact on their business. In addition to highly-publicized law enforcement actions against local terror suspects and a small number of successful or attempted attacks, BiH has seen a major outflow of recruits to the Islamic State and al-Qaeda affiliates over the past two years.

“At the end of 2015, we had two events that had a huge negative impact on our country’s image, the attack in Rajlovac and the arrest of 11 persons suspected of planning a bomb attack on New Year’s Eve in Sarajevo,” [Asja Hadziefendic-Mesic, of the Tourism Community of the Canton Sarajevo], said.

“Many tourists decided to cancel the trips and reservations they had already booked as a consequence,” she added.
