{"id":7966,"date":"2023-02-28T18:49:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T23:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bihdaytonproject.com\/?p=7966"},"modified":"2023-02-28T19:03:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T00:03:40","slug":"faz-piece-slams-colonial-ohr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bihdaytonproject.com\/?p=7966","title":{"rendered":"FAZ piece slams &#8220;colonial&#8221; OHR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a German-language piece in the major German daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/politik\/ausland\/wie-die-eu-christian-schmidt-zum-koenig-von-bosnien-ernannt-hat-18703925.html\">Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung<\/a>, correspondent Michael Martens calls the powers of the Office of the High Representative in BiH \u201ccolonial\u201d and says they \u201cseem to have come from the toolbox of an autocracy.\u201d Martens notes the controversy over Christian Schmidt\u2019s October 2022 electoral law decree and writes, \u201cThe real scandal, which strangely enough is often overlooked by left-wing critics, is that he was able to decree the changes at all.\u201d Martens quotes former High Representative Carl Bildt as saying, &#8220;For at least a decade, [the Office of the High Representative] has been part of the problem in Bosnia.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also quotes former High Representative Wolfgang Petritsch as saying that the powers of the office are &#8220;deeply undemocratic&#8221; and that the High Representative is now &#8220;part of the problem in every respect, not the solution.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martens further writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Bosnia is far from a perfect state, but despite its shortcomings it is a democracy. The country has been a member of the Council of Europe for many years, there are no political prisoners there, no one is tortured in the country\u2019s prisons, it is safe to criticize all parties in the country, there is a diverse media landscape and regular democratic elections . . . repeatedly lead to peaceful changes of government and new coalitions.
