Court Delays Oric Trial Pending UN Response – BIRN

A BiH Court judge has declined to set a date for the start of Nasser Oric’s war crimes trial; the Court is awaiting a ruling from the UN Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals about the legality of the trial. Oric’s attorneys claim that the charges Oric faces now in BiH are the same as those of which he was acquitted by the ICTY in 2008, and has asked the UN body to forbid any further prosecution. Prosecutors, however, say the charges they’re currently pursuing are substantially different, so the trial should go ahead.

Judge Saban Makusmic said that the date when the trial will start will only be set after another status conference is held on December 22, when he said he hoped that a decision will be made.
